GENERAL ENFORCEMENT
This class is designed to give students the ability to take effective enforcement action upon commercial vehicles and their drivers. This course will cover license requirements (CDL/chauffer/operator), medical card and driver qualifications, hours of service (log book), driving rules, registration, fuel tax, common violations, reasons for a stop, and commercial citation completion. This is a 2-day course, 8am-1pm each day to allow for travel
and lunch.
Cost is $395/student.
SIZE & WEIGHT ENFORCEMENT
This class is designed to give officers the ability to take enforcement action upon commercial vehicles in regards to their length, width, height, weight, and registration as it pertains to vehicle weight. Included with this class is a practical exercise in weighing a vehicle with portable scales. This is a 2-day course, 8am-1pm each day to allow for travel and lunch. Cost is $395/student.
CMV INSPECTIONS
This class is designed for officers who wish to conduct safety inspections upon commercial motor vehicles. This class covers many of the items found in the General Enforcement Class (which is a prerequisite), plus an extensive coverage of equipment regulations. Included with this class is a practical exercise inspecting an actual commercial motor vehicle and using the inspection procedures and criteria. This is a 4-day course, 8am-1pm each day to allow for travel and lunch.
Cost for this class is $795/student.
OFFICER UPDATE
This class, given in the spring and fall, is a one day class to provide
experienced officers with the changes in commercial vehicle regulations, as well as a comprehensive review and refresher. Class is from 8am-1pm to allow for travel and lunch. Cost for the fall class is $250/student. Cost for the spring class includes a new color copy of the CVSA Out of Service criteria, $295/student.
CMV AWARENESS & ENFORCEMENT
This class is a condensed version of the General Enforcement Class, but does not cover all of the same material. This 6-hour course will give officers a basic awareness of commercial vehicles and how to conduct enforcement. Items covered will include licensing, driver qualifications, traffic violations, basic equipment, fuel tax, and registrations. $250/student.
RADAR & LASER OPERATOR CERTIFICATION
These classes follow the strict guidelines of the Michigan Commission On Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). The Radar class is a 2-day course, 8am-5pm each day, with an hour for lunch. Cost for this class is $145/student. The Laser class is a half-day (4 hour) course, mornings or afternoons, $45/student.
**NOTE: MCOLES requires all Laser operators to be radar certified prior to class.
Materials used in class include the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, the Michigan Motor Carrier Safety Act (181), the Michigan Motor Vehicle Code (Act 300), the Michigan Fuel Tax Act (119), and other related handouts and publications.
